SpeakEasy Spanish Books

Project: Book Cover Designs

Client: SpeakEasy Communications, Inc.

Goal: Create a modern, up-to-date look for a library of instructional Spanish books.

One of the most difficult aspects of book design is to create a look that is not easily dated. No one wants to purchase “old” books. Covers need to be eye-catching and modern. (They also need to withstand the test of time—although technologically possible, no business wants the added expense to update its look every year.)

The majority of the books in this series share the same overall design: a contrasting bar of color across the bottom third of the book to promote the SpeakEasy Spanish™ logo. (The client wanted a series that would look great even from viewing only the spines on a library or bookstore shelf.)

For a few of the books such as Healthcare shown above, I found a stock photograph that was so appealing, it was used as the focus of the book. When items of technology were chosen (like the stethoscope), those items were carefully deliberated to be certain that it celebrated the overall theme as opposed to a specific item that could easily indicate a time period.
